With over 118 million passengers annually, London Liverpool Street is Britain’s busiest railway station. The approved plans are set to deliver transformative changes that will help to support the 35% forecast increase in passengers, predicted to be 158 million by 2041.
Key improvements include a 76% increase in overall concourse capacity, step-free access to all platforms and a new accessible roof garden – the largest landscaped roof in the City of London.
The project has been led by ACME alongside the wider design team for Network Rail. Donald Insall Associates has been supporting the scheme as heritage and townscape consultant.
The scheme has been carefully designed to safeguard Liverpool Street's unique heritage. The Victorian trainshed remains untouched, and the scheme will unlock new views over the Victorian architecture.
Ellie Burrows, Managing Director for Network Rail's Eastern region, said: "This decision represents a key step towards the transformation of Britain's busiest station and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Liverpool Street. Our plans focus on improving the everyday experience for passengers whilst respecting the station's unique heritage. With annual passenger numbers forecast to grow to 158 million, this approval ensures the station will be future proofed for decades to come.”
