Dorian is an accredited conservation architect and, since 2025, the Chief Executive of Donald Insall Associates. Having joined the practice in 2011, he established the practice’s York studio in 2021 and rapidly grew the team there while overseeing a range of large-scale heritage projects for local authorities, charitable trusts and private owners. He is a communicative, hands-on leader with a track record of successfully guiding clients through complex procurement, contractual and on-site challenges; he is also a valuable partner to large charitable organisations where funding conditions dictate programme and project parameters.

Simon is a Chartered Architect and an Architect Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC). He serves on the AABC’s Board of Trustees. His passion for the historic environment is reflected in the projects that he has successfully delivered for clients since he joined the practice in 2000. He has helped to bring several important sites back to life through restoration and reuse, and finding the most sustainable, most financially viable solution.

Simon’s experience and enthusiasm, coupled with detailed technical knowledge, help clients to obtain consent for sensitive sites and deliver projects through to completion. Simon enjoys working in multidisciplinary teams on challenging projects and has a practical approach which adds real value.

A passion for the historic environment led Simon to specialise in conservation early in his architectural training at the University of Liverpool, and steered his coursework and reading so as to equip him for a career in the field. His dissertation explored the creative reuse of buildings, beginning with the work of 19th century restorers such as Gilbert Scott, followed by the emergence of the conservation movement and subsequent legislation. It finished with an analysis of today’s best practice and was awarded the annual dissertation prize.

Helen joined Donald Insall Associates in 2013 from English Heritage (now Historic England), wherein she worked as an Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas; prior to this she was a Senior Conservation Officer at Westminster City Council. At DIA, Helen initially worked in London, advising on major schemes for clients as diverse as CapCo and the Grosvenor Estate. In 2017 she set up a new branch of the practice in Oxford, and can now count the Colleges of St Anne’s, Nuffield, Lincoln, Hertford, St. Hugh’s and Wycliffe Hall amongst her clients, as well as many private individuals and developers.

Helen is a highly respected conservationist, with over 20 years’ experience in the planning and development sector, and has an outstanding track record of negotiating consent in respect of sensitive and complex sites. She has lectured extensively at universities and conferences on conservation planning and architectural history and is a member of the Oxford Diocesan Advisory Committee and a Director of the Historic Towns and Villages Forum.

Jenny joined the Practice in 2018, as Legal Counsel.  Jenny is a solicitor, and has experience in large City of London legal practice, advising in relation to projects, development, and funding.  She also has experience working for and with grant funding bodies and charities.  As a Director and Company Secretary, Jenny works across the practice advising colleagues in relation to risk, regulatory and strategic matters.

Francis is an Architect Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC); he joined Donald Insall Associates in 1991, qualifying as an architect in the following year. He became a Director in 2014 and is based in our London office, focusing on specialist conservation repair and Conservation Management Plans (CMPs) to guide the whole process of historic buildings management. He has a particular interest in traditional building materials, their repair and conservation, and writes regularly for specialist publications.

His technical understanding of historic buildings construction permits an authoritative approach to conservation work for buildings throughout all sectors. As well as those listed above, his clients include the National Trust, English Heritage, the Church of England dioceses of Canterbury, London, Chelmsford and Durham, various London-based Local Authorities, as well as private owners of listed buildings.

Francis is regularly appointed as a specialist conservation consultant to heritage projects abroad, particularly the Caribbean.

Robin joined the Practice in September 2019 to lead the finance team. CIMA qualified, Robin has extensive experience in leading the finance function to partner with the business to deliver better project and financial outcomes. Working in both listed and privately owned companies, Robin has spent most of his career working the construction sector with both professional service companies and contractors. This includes operating across Europe, establishing new entities as well as joint ventures.

Matthew leads the architectural teams in Donald Insall Associates’ Birmingham and Oxford studios. Well versed in both modern and traditional construction techniques, Matthew is particularly skilled at analysing and reordering complex buildings whilst pragmatically balancing the needs of historic conservation with those of sustainable revenue generation, and making traditional buildings fit for day-to-day use.

Matthew’s portfolio features a diverse mix of heritage and design-led projects, from contemporary new builds to transformations of Grade I-listed buildings and Scheduled Monuments. He is an AABC-accredited conservation architect, and on the RIBA Principal Designer Register.

He co-chairs the Birmingham Civic Society, and is a member of the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Diocese of Worcester and the Fabric Advisory Committee for Birmingham Cathedral.

Matt leads our Conwy studio, guiding clients through all project work stages. A conservation-accredited architect (AABC) with an MSc in Sustainable Building Conservation, he combines expertise in sustainable design with a deep passion for historic buildings to work collaboratively with clients to unlock the opportunities present in every site, no matter the challenges and perceived restrictions. Beyond practice, he is actively supporting the industry and helping to shape the next generation of architects. He currently chairs the RSAW Large Practice Network, is a member of the RIBA Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (EDI) Group and an external examiner for both the RIBA and the Manchester School of Architecture at Part 3. He is also a guest critic at the Welsh School of Architecture for their MArch course.

Cordula joined the practice in 2008. She is now Practice Director and leads our Heritage Consultancy in London. She has twenty years of experience as a heritage and design advisor, and has led heritage and townscape strategy, design development and planning negotiations for many complex sites in London and nationally. Among her clients are London’s Great Estates, including The Crown Estate and Grosvenor, private developers, and charitable and cultural organisations. Cordula is a Chair of the London Borough of Islington’s Design Review Panel, and she sits on the Design Review Panel for the London Borough of Lambeth. She was educated at the Bartlett School, the Sorbonne in Paris and Berlin’s Humboldt University. Cordula has a special interest in the architecture of the twentieth century.

Cordula has been a member of the IHBC for most of her career. She was previously a project director for Publica, a conservation officer at Islington Council and an advisor for the Twentieth Century Society. Cordula has written on new architecture and on building conservation for a range of British and European magazines and publications.

Edward is an AABC & RIBA-accredited conservation architect and the London architecture studio lead at DIA, where he is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team. A respected and technically accomplished architect, his expertise lies in successfully delivering complex projects at in-use Grade I-listed Buildings and Scheduled Ancient Monuments, often within World Heritage Sites. He is leading DIA's work at Blenheim Palace, including the major re-roofing initiative; he also directs Parliamentary frameworks and key projects such as the Victoria Tower, alongside projects at Kensington Palace Orangery, Barrington Court, and Brighton Museum. Edward has a proven track record of over a decade of continuous work at the Palace of Westminster, overseeing notable programmes including the Europa Nostra award-winning Westminster Hall, the Courtyards Conservation Programme, and the Encaustic Tiles programme.

Kate leads Donald Insall Associates’ Manchester office and Northern Heritage Consultancy team, providing detailed advice and guidance in respect of development proposals in a range of different contexts and assessing their impact on heritage assets in accordance with the NPPF and local policy and guidance.

Kate is a full member of the IHBC, a trustee of the Greater Manchester Building Presentation Trust, is chair of the Victorian Society (Manchester Region) Committee and sits on the Places Matter Northwest Design Review Panel and the Manchester Heritage Panel.

Andrew is an historic buildings architect with over 40 years in the industry. His team from Ferrey & Mennim, a practice with a 100 year history in York, merged with Donald Insall Associates in 2024 and he now directs the York office. He has been Cathedral Architect for St Magnus in Kirkwall for over 20 years and along with Hull Minster is architect to over 150 churches in the York, Leeds and Sheffield dioceses. He is also an Architect Advisor to York and Sheffield DAC's and sits on the Fabric Advisory Committee of Durham Cathedral.

Caroline joined the practice in 2001 and specialises in new-build and modern interventions in historic fabric. She is an RIBA-accredited Specialist Conservation Architect, and consistently delivers projects on time and within budget. Caroline is particularly skilled in the design and delivery of modern contextual buildings and at managing complex, fast-tracked construction projects. Clients enjoy Caroline’s effective leadership approach, which enthuses project teams so as to achieve their objectives.

Renée leads our Marketing and Communications team, bringing offbeat thinking to how our relationship with the past impacts the future of our built environment. She re-joined the practice in 2023, having cut her teeth in the industry at an AJ100 top 10 practice. In a previous career, Renée worked in contemporary art, specialising in audience engagement for the likes of Tate, Southbank Centre and Wellcome Trust; she has guest lectured on art and print at universities in London, Denver and Oslo. She is on the steering committee for the built environment networking group Build Up and hosts regular events at our studios.

Nick is a chartered environmental and sustainability professional and serves as our Practice Director for Sustainability. Since joining in 2024, he leads our sustainability strategy and transformation, ensuring we operate as a truly responsible practice.

With a career that spans roles as an environmental regulator and sustainability leader at global engineering firms, Nick has contributed to some of Europe's largest infrastructure and built environment projects. He is a Fellow of the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), serving on their Professional Standards Committee, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, reflecting his dedication to global environmental stewardship.

Victoria joined the practice in 2012, having previously been a teaching fellow at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. A qualified and experienced architect and historian, Victoria has an up-to-date understanding of strategic conservation, planning and heritage policies, advising clients such as the Crown Estate, Sotheby’s, the MOD, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as well as many private developers.  She retains links with the Bartlett as an external examiner on the MA course Architecture and Historic Urban Environments.

Victoria  served on the Twentieth Century Society Buildings Committee for eight years, is the author of Built for a Better Future (1994), a monograph about one of Britain’s seminal post-war industrial buildings, and has co-written and presented BBC TV programmes about British and German approaches to industrial heritage.

Victoria has a particular interest and expertise in the links between buildings, landscapes and the former British Empire  Her Ph.D. on British architecture and Caribbean plantations won the RIBA President’s Award  for Outstanding PhD research in 2010 and is published as A Bittersweet Heritage: Slavery, Architecture and the British Landscape (2022). Her work has also been published in the Oxford Companion to Black British History (2007) and English Heritage’s Slavery and the British Country House (2013).

Patrick is a registered architect and conservation architect. He specialises in heritage sustainability, including at urban scale. Clients include public bodies, cultural institutions and community groups. Twenty years experience in the management of change to historic places and repair of historic buildings and interiors includes surveys and investigations, technical research and development, and works to heritage assets of all designations, including Scheduled Monuments and Grade I-listed Buildings in World Heritage sites.
Patrick is interested in the way that buildings communicate significance, how this signals societal change, and how architectural conservation mediates the meaning that history holds for contemporary audiences. He was formerly a trustee of the 20th Century Scociety, and is co-author of Fascismo Abbandonato: The Children's Colonie of Mussolini's Italy, a study of the architectural monuments of the youth organisations in fascist Italy. He has lectured on heritage conservation at the British School in Rome, the Technische Universität Berlin, and Hochschule RheinMain, Wiesbaden.

Educated at the University of Bath, Chris’ experience includes both contemporary and heritage projects in both Bristol and London. Since joining Donald Insall Associates in 2016, Chris’ work has focused on contemporary insertions and extensions to historic buildings as well as their restoration. Highlights include working on a Grade I listed deconsecrated church building in Central London, works at the Grade I listed Palace of Westminster, working on a Grade I listed university building in Central London, and a contemporary extension to a Grade II listed Georgian property in South London.

Nicki joined Donald Insall Associates in 2016 and has a particular passion for traditional construction techniques, materials and craftsmanship, along with achieving sensitive design within the historic built environment. She is experienced at running multi-disciplinary teams across complex and challenging projects including new interventions and adaptations within heritage environments, as well as repair and refurbishment of historic sites. She supports all practical work with a thorough understanding of character and significance. She is highly motivated and conscientious, and greatly values working alongside specialist teams of heritage craftspeople. Nicki also sits on the Design Review Panel for Greater Cambridge.

Jeremy is a Conservation Accredited Architect who specialises in conserving and adapting heritage sites within the cultural, institutional and commercial sectors. Jeremy’s expertise lies in combining traditional restoration and sensitive adaptive reuse to revive and secure historic buildings and estates for long term use. His recent portfolio of work includes the refurbishment of the Conservatory Café at Cliveden House with the National Trust, the renovation of the Chartered Accountant’s Hall, and the renewal of Harlesden High Street’s shopfronts as part of Historic England’s Heritage Action Zone scheme. He also led the £4.1m NLHF funded revitalisation of West Norwood Cemetery, one of London’s Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Jeremy has extensive experience working with private clients and navigating complex stakeholder relationships; he currently acts as conservation advisor to the Crown Estate and South Kensington Estates EMS. Jeremy also sits on the Steering Group for Kensal Green Cemetery.

Rebecca joined the northern historic buildings team at Donald Insall Associates with over 10 years of experience working within the built environment, drawing on her academic qualifications in building conservation (IHBC) and planning (MRTPI). Rebecca was head of heritage and townscape at a national planning consultancy before moving to DIA to grow the team in Yorkshire and the North-East. Prior to this, Rebecca held positions at Historic England, the Diocese of Lincoln, and most recently, acted as northern heritage team leader at Purcell Architecture.

Rebecca has played an integral role in major conservation and restoration projects ranging from Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and Manchester Town Hall to Castlefield Viaduct and the Grade-I Temple Newsam estate in Leeds. She specialises in managing change to complex historic places by offering pragmatic, creative solutions to clients, particularly in the face of the challenges posed by climate change. She has a proven track record in providing award-winning advice and advocacy to unlock the sustainable future of significant, multi-asset places for the people that value them.

Rebecca is a CFCE-appointed member of the Chester Cathedral and Southwell Minster Fabric Advisory Committees. She is also a trustee of the York Georgian Society and acts as their historic buildings representative on planning and development casework.

Ian is an accredited conservation architect with 20 years’ wide-ranging experience in architecture.  He is an inspecting architect for the York, Leeds, Lincoln and Sheffield Dioceses, caring for over 40 churches and contributes to work on an additional 190 churches, cathedrals and minsters managed by the practice. He undertakes many complex quinquennial inspections every year and then prioritises and leads subsequent architectural and conservation projects over the following years. These have included a wide variety of works to Scheduled Ancient Monuments and Grade I- listed buildings, but also in-depth community consultation and pioneering environmental sustainability projects. These have included Passivhaus projects and Passivhaus Enerphit listed buildings.  As a result Ian is the Environmental Advisor to the York Diocese DAC.  He is also passionately committed to close teamwork with clients and users, and consultation with the wider community.

Harriet is an experienced accredited conservation architect and an associate at Insall. She joined the Oxford studio at the start of 2024 and is growing the architectural team there whilst working on a range of projects in Oxfordshire. Her career has focused on sensitive regeneration projects to significant historic and listed buildings and places, including historic houses, national museums, and cultural visitor attractions. She has strong skills in the conservation of buildings and historic house interiors, as well as creative design within historic contexts; and she is passionate about how the two disciplines can be integrated to create places which breathe new life into old buildings. Her collaborative working approach means she is successful in designing and delivering exemplary projects with clients, project teams, planners, conservation officers and contractors. She has also lectured at various events, conferences and on the MSc in Building Conservation at the Weald and Download Museum.

Beverley has over 10 years of experience as a Senior Heritage Consultant. She recently joined the Historic Consultancy Team from another conservation architecture practice, working in both the London and York studios. In her previous role, she worked on a variety of projects including Elizabeth Tower, Minley Manor, Durham Castle, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and Newcastle Cathedral.

Beverley initially worked in telecommunications but was eventually able to pursue her ambition of studying archaeology at the University of Cambridge. It was whilst studying Medieval Archaeology that she became interested in standing buildings, particularly high-status timber framed buildings and Anglo-Saxon and medieval churches.

After gaining an MA in Building Archaeology, Bev worked for the CBA, one of the six national amenity societies. As Conservation Officer she commented on applications for LBC, focusing on vernacular buildings and industrial heritage. During her time at the CBA, she also gained an Mst in Building History.

Beverley is able to prepare a variety of reports in her role, including Historic Building Reports, CMPs, Archaeological Building Recordings, CAMPs and Archaeological Desk Based Assessments, and is both a full member of the IHBC and of CIfA. Outside of work she is the Winter Conference Secretary for the Vernacular Architecture Group and a Field Test examiner on the Building History Mst at the University of Cambridge.

Phoebe Graham joined Donald Insall Associates in 2025. Prior to this, she was a Senior Design and Heritage Officer at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for three years. During that time, Phoebe dealt with many of Kensington and Chelsea's high-profile buildings, including Harrods and the Royal Hospital. Phoebe was also a Senior Design, Heritage and Sustainability Officer at Westminster City Council prior to this. In both roles, Phoebe had strong working relationships with architects and politicians, as well as Historic England and other heritage groups. Phoebe has experience providing detailed advice and guidance in respect of development proposals in a range of different contexts and assesses their impact on heritage assets.

Phoebe has a MSc in the Conservation of Historic Buildings from the University of Bath and a BA in History from the University of Exeter. Phoebe is also a full member of the IHBC.

Joining Donald Insall Associates in 2022, Daniel is an accredited conservation architect who has primarily worked on the repair and regeneration of historic buildings, including the revitalisation of Wentworth Woodhouse. His interest and expertise lies in the care of historic churches; he is approved to work in seven Diocese across the Midlands and North of England. He is appointed to a range of ecclesiastical buildings, from small rural chapels to Major Parish Churches and Minsters, and sits on the Executive Committee of the Church Repair Society.

Daniel graduated from the University of Lincoln and the University of Nottingham with Distinction. As a student, he was nominated for the RIBA Silver Medal before teaching at the University of Sheffield and Cambridge.

Tony is an architect with extensive experience in the conservation and reuse of historic buildings. He joined Donald Insall Associates in 1993 as a member of the Windsor Castle restoration team, opened the Chester office in 1998, became a Board Director in 2005 and served as Chairman between 2013-2023. Tony has a strong portfolio of award-winning projects completed under his leadership, many of which involve significant changes in sensitive historic buildings. Furthermore, he has experience with Conservation Management Plans and new design in sensitive settings; he is the inspecting architect for several Cheshire churches and acts as cathedral architect to Chester Cathedral.

As a visiting lecturer, Tony has taught at the University of Birmingham and the University of Salford; he has spoken at a multitude of conferences, including Heriot-Watt University and the North West Association of Civic Trusts.

Peter joined the London studio in 2022 after completing his Architectural training between The Glasgow School of Art and University of Kent at Canterbury.

He has a passion for providing historic buildings with a new lease of life through sensitive yet contemporary interventions. Peter’s love for heritage architecture developed while working on and around the great Cathedrals of England at University, while his academic work emphasised the social responsibility of architecture, which has been further explored through working on Local Authority schools in the UK, and Healthcare design in rural Zambia. He has since gained experience with commercial new builds and workplace fitout design, before joining the team at Donald Insall Associates. Peter is a firm believer in adaptive reuse of existing buildings as a response to the construction industry’s role in addressing our changing climate.

Alfie is an architect with experience in conservation as well as new build, across a range of commercial and domestic projects. He studied at The Bartlett School of Architecture, where he carried out research into adaptive and democratic approaches to housing. Alfie is driven by a pursuit of an honest architecture which is in conversation with its setting, which is poetic and underpinned by a clear logic, working intuitively and quickly to speculate on possible and practical solutions.

Andrew joined Donald Insall Associates’ London Office in July 2023, following the completion of a dual accredited Masters Degree in Architecture (ARB) and Urban Planning (RTPI) at The University of Dundee, in Scotland. Currently, he is working towards charterships in both Architecture and Urban Planning.

Andrew has a passion for ecclesiastical architecture, forming the focus of his Masters Thesis which assessed the viability of reintegrating derelict church buildings back into the community and urban environment. For this, he received the Doug Reid Award for 'Engagement with Existing Buildings’ by the Dundee Institute of Architects.

During his time with us, he has worked on projects within a large variety of historic buildings including The Palace of Westminster, Royal Palaces, The Tower of London, 29-39 Oxford Street, West Norwood Cemetery, and the Grade I-listed New West End Synagogue. These projects vary from feasibility stage through to construction, providing Andrew with experience throughout the design and construction process.

Cameron joined the York Office as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant in 2023, having undertaken two years experience at a conservation practice in Shropshire. He was named RIBA East Midlands Student of the Year in 2019 and received the RIBA Bronze Medal nomination for his undergraduate work at the University of Lincoln. Completing his MArch at the University of Huddersfield in 2023, he received the RIBA Silver and Dissertation Medals nominations and RIBA for his thesis project which explored themes of conservation and temporality structured around Ruskin’s ‘The Seven Lamps of Architecture’. Portions of this were subsequently published in AD magazine.

Cameron hopes to develop his expertise in architectural conservation, exploring how the field creates questions regarding the future of buildings. He has a particular interest in medieval buildings and how such structures have adapted to societal changes, and how they must continue to adapt in the face of contemporary issues such as climate change.

Cameron also lectures part time at Leeds Beckett University.

Tanvir Hasan is a Director Emeritus at Donald Insall Associates, having served as Deputy Chairman and London studio lead for over a decade. An accredited conservation architect with a background in academic research, she has led high-profile projects transforming scheduled and Grade I-listed buildings such as The Parliamentary Estate and The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew.

She is currently working with the World Monument Fund in Iraq, providing post-conflict conservation advice to rehabilitate war-damaged cultural institutions while bringing together communities from different religions – a unity severed by the recent violent conflicts of the region.
