Network Rail's bold and collaborative vision for London Liverpool Street station has now been validated by the City of London.
Since opening in 1875, Liverpool Street station and the ‘Square Mile’ area of London have developed in parallel, each driving the success and evolution of the other. London Liverpool Street now connects 118 million people a year within London, East Anglia and the east of England. With annual passenger numbers forecast to grow by 35% to 158 million by 2041, the plans will ensure that the station is future-proofed, ready to accommodate over 200 million people in the decades ahead, while enhancing accessibility for all.
The proposed design responds to its historic context. The station entrances and reimagined concourse roof speak to the architecture of the listed station, adding its next layer of significance. New walkways inside the trainshed will allow for greater public access and appreciation of the Victorian part of the station. The station’s Grade II-listed First World War memorials and two Kindertransport sculptures are celebrated by providing better settings.
This project is led by ACME alongside the wider design team for Network Rail. Donald Insall Associates has been supporting the scheme through heritage and townscape advice.
