Brighton Museum Gallery

Restoring the roof, building climate resilience

Funded by Arts Council England and Brighton & Hove City Council, a roof restoration project is underway to replace the non-original external roof lantern with an insulated solid lead roof construction. This will significantly improve the building’s thermal performance, maintenance and longevity, to protect the historic fabric and collections below.

The 20th Century gallery at the Grade II*-listed Brighton Museum is set within the grounds of the Grade I-listed Brighton Pavilion and Pavilion Gardens, which sit within the Valley Gardens Conservation Area in Brighton and Hove.

Safety, access, maintenance and longevity.

Understood to have been installed in the 1960s, the previous non-original roof lantern was performing poorly, difficult to access, and causing excessive heat build-up within the roof space, becoming a risk to both the collections and the historic fabric.

The introduction of a solid roof has provided an opportunity to reinstate glazing of the original coffered laylight and artificially light the gallery from above as a reinterpretation of the original architectural intent of the gallery as a top-lit space.

Gutters have been redesigned to improve maintenance, cleaning access, and increase their capacity to manage ever-increasing rainfall events, to future-proof the building in the context of climate change.

The works have established new safe access walkways throughout the roof void to aid routine internal maintenance, services have been rationalised to improve efficiency and reduce excess power use , and fire compartment, detection and suppression systems have all been upgraded.

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery is an important historic building, part of the Royal Pavilion estate. It’s so important that buildings like this are maintained for the benefit of current and future generations.

Visitors to the museum will be able to appreciate our artworks and exhibitions knowing the building is more sustainable, energy-efficient with better lighting and ventilation.
