Civic landmark renewed

Kidderminster Town Hall is a Grade II-listed complex, built between 1853 and 1876. Working with lead architect Howells and the client Wyre Forest District Council, DIA acted as conservation architect on the project to restore the historic Town Hall.

Originally designed as two separate buildings, a new central courtyard connects the historic spaces – including the Music Hall, Corn Exchange and municipal functions – into a single, legible public building. Its design draws on Kidderminster’s textile heritage while remaining clearly contemporary, allowing the historic architecture to remain the focus while providing a flexible, all-day space for events, performances and informal use.

Key historic spaces, including the Music Hall and former Public Rooms, have been sensitively repaired, with original architectural detailing revealed and enhanced. Targeted modern interventions – such as improved accessibility, discreet building services and new performance infrastructure – support the building’s renewed civic and cultural role without compromising its significance.

The revitalisation demonstrates how thoughtful conservation and contemporary interventions can work together, securing a sustainable future for this civic landmark and bringing it back into community use.
