West Norwood Cemetery

Conserving one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’

One of the "Magnificent Seven" cemeteries of London, West Norwood Cemetery is a Listed Park and Garden. Originally opened in 1837, the site includes over 65 listed monuments including St Stephen’s Chapel. In 2017, Lambeth Council appointed us as architects and lead consultants for an ambitious project to conserve the cemetery’s range of built structures whilst offering new experiences and facilities to increase community use.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project consisted of three main aspects: The conversion and adaptation of the entrance Lodge to a public exhibition space; the repair and conservation to 16 listed monuments, and the conversion of St Stephen’s Chapel into a unique events space.

St Stephen's Chapel has undergone roof repairs, along with internal works including the installation of accessible toilets, new step free access sensitive to the building and the landscape, and careful redecoration of the characterful ceiling has restored the space. With a new lighting and AV system, the Chapel is now ready to host unique and exciting events. The ceiling was restored by specialists Britain & Co, who undertook paint analysis which informed the new colour palette.

Conservation works are now complete, with 15 listed monuments removed from the Heritage at Risk Register, with St Stephen’s Chapel to follow.
