A unique unfinished Neo-Gothic mansion

Woodchester Mansion is a Grade I-listed Victorian Gothic Mansion located within a secluded Cotswold valley. Designed by Benjamin Bucknall for the wealthy Catholic convert William Leigh, the mansion combines local Cotswold stonework with the theories of the influential French architect Viollet-le-Duc. Construction began in the mid-1850s but was abandoned in the 1870s, leaving behind a nationally significant architectural time capsule showcasing the craftsmanship and construction techniques of the period.

DIA was appointed by Woodchester Mansion Trust as retained architect in 2019, initially commissioned to produce a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan, establishing a clear framework for the building’s ongoing care and long-term vision. This has been followed by a series of capital projects, condition surveys, repair programmes and strategic masterplanning initiatives that continue today.

Conserving an unfinished masterpiece

The main challenge lies in conserving this building in its unfinished state. Its abandonment leaves us with unglazed windows, unplastered walls, incomplete interiors and builder’s tools frozen in time, revealing all the secrets of construction usually concealed. Our work focuses on stabilising and repairing the mansion while preserving the unfinished character that makes it so unique. Wherever possible, repairs are informed by historic evidence, including original drawings, enabling lost features to be carefully reinstated where appropriate.

Another critical area of the building’s interest is as a home to colonies of very rare Greater and Lesser Horseshoe Bats. Our work often involves careful negotiation to repair the building while remaining sensitive to the stringent ecological conditions necessary to protect the bats.

Beyond physical conservation, our work supports the Trust’s ambition to create a financially sustainable future for Woodchester Mansion. As a unique environment for learning about historic construction methods, we are helping to develop proposals that will strengthen the mansion’s role as a centre for education, heritage skills and traditional craftsmanship.
